Two survive horror small plane crash as plane plunges headfirst into Cotswolds road

This is the shocking moment a light aircraft crashes headfirst onto a busy road in the Cotswolds, narrowly missing motorists.

The pilot and passenger, both men, are seen grimacing in the cockpit after their glider lost a wing in the crash.

The plane crashed on the A419 in Gloucestershire. Rescue teams rushed to the scene. The Great Western Air Ambulance was among those who reported the crashed motor glider at around 4:45 p.m. yesterday.

The accident occurred on the A road, just metres from the runway of Aston Down airfield in Frampton Mansell, between Cirencester and Stroud.

A witness said it “looked like the vehicle had stopped and crashed onto the main road.”

Tony Breakspear-Jones was stuck in traffic near the scene of the accident. “We could see what looked like a glider,” he told BBC Radio Gloucestershire. “My stepdaughter, who is a nurse, stayed at the scene to help,” he added.

The two occupants of the aircraft are unlikely to have been seriously injured, as the rescue helicopter was withdrawn shortly after arriving at the scene of the accident.

In a statement, a Gloucestershire Constabulary spokesman said: “Motorists are advised that roads will be closed while emergency services are in attendance.”

“There were two passengers on board who are being examined by emergency services. It is believed that no other vehicles were involved.”

The Cotswold Gliding Club said it was aware of the incident and that the Air Accident Investigation Branch [AAIB] is now “involved”.

A spokesman for the AAIB said they had been informed of the “light aircraft accident” and would launch an investigation.
