New video shows man driving the wrong way before killing woman and teenager on San Jose freeway

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) — A video shows a truck driving in the wrong direction for several minutes on a busy San Jose highway on Monday before killing two people.

Footage provided to ABC7 on Tuesday shows the Toyota Tacoma driving the wrong way on Highway 85 northbound.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the truck was traveling in the wrong direction for several miles before the tragic accident occurred near the intersection of Highways 85 and 87.

According to the California Highway Patrol, two people died in a wrong-way driving accident on State Route 85 in San Jose on Monday.

Officials said they received the first calls around 3:40 p.m. that Monday.

“Some of the initial calls we received said the pickup truck was in the area of ​​85th and Saratoga, several miles away,” said Officer Ross Lee of the CHP.

The CHP confirmed that a 47-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy were killed in the accident.

Although the Santa Clara County Coroner's Office did not officially release the names of the victims Tuesday, an email was sent to families at the school the boy attended.

It said that he was in the 9th grade and that his family said he was happy at the school, which he was only allowed to attend for a short time.

The new school year had begun less than two weeks before the crash.

According to officials, the driver of the truck was a 39-year-old man who was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The pickup had a Florida license plate.

A check of his name revealed records of several traffic violations in his Florida county, including a misdemeanor for reckless driving.

A driver collided head-on with a school bus carrying more than 40 children near Watsonville in Santa Cruz County.

Patrick Garrison lives right next to the intersection of Highways 85 and 87, where the accident occurred.

He learned about the accident when his daughter called him.

“She called me to make sure I was OK,” Garrison said. “I asked, 'What's going on?' She said, 'Oh, there's been a fatal accident.'”

Garrison said he has lived near the highway for nearly a decade and has seen serious accidents.

Still, he says the cause of this crash is one of the most shocking he has ever heard of.

“It's heartbreaking,” he said. “And driving the wrong way in daylight. It's just crazy.”

The CHP said it is still investigating why the driver was going in the wrong direction and which highway he came from.

Officials told us the suspect was still in the hospital and had not been registered.

Investigators are investigating the allegation of manslaughter.

The CHP is asking any witnesses to come forward.
