Man accused of shooting 2-year-old girl in Dallas traffic accident released on bail

DALLAS – A young family says they feel unsafe after learning that the man accused of shooting their two-year-old daughter in a case of apparent road rage has already been released from prison.

On Sunday, police said Jason Cain shot at a family delivering DoorDash items in their car, hitting their young daughter.

The girl has now been released from the hospital, but the family says they feel less safe now that they know the suspect is no longer behind bars.

One quick glance is enough to fail to notice that two-year-old Jasmine Garcia is anything but a happy little girl.

Jacqueline Garcia says the only thing her daughter does is hurt.

“She's saying something like, 'Mommy, ouch. Ouch.' But she doesn't know why,” Jacqueline said. “She doesn't know what happened to her.”

Jasmine was shot in the back seat of her parents' car on Sunday evening as they delivered a DoorDash order in a neighborhood on the far east side of Dallas.

The family said they were looking for an address when they turned into a street and saw a motorcycle driving in the middle of the road without its lights on.

“They almost collided. So my fiancé swerved to avoid an accident,” Jacqueline recalled. “And that's when he swerved. They honked at each other.”

Jacqueline thought that was the end, but she said the motorcycle followed the family's car and the man on it shouted at her.

The mother says the man pulled out a gun and fired at the back of the car. Then she heard Jasmine scream in the back seat.

“She was screaming,” she recalled. “We both turned around and she was covered in blood.”

A woman who heard the gunshots ran to the car and told the family to go to the hospital immediately while she called 911.

Doctors told the Garcias that the bullet had penetrated Jasmine's chest and eventually landed in her diaphragm. Doctors did not remove it because doing so could have caused even greater damage.

Jacqueline is grateful that her daughter is still alive.

Police arrested 50-year-old Jason Cain for the shooting. When police searched his home, they found several firearms, including automatic weapons. They also saw satanic and Nazi symbols in his home.

Cain is charged with assault on a child and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was released from jail on bail Monday morning.

“We were devastated and worried for our safety as police said he had multiple firearms in his home,” Jacqueline said. “We just don't feel safe right now and that's really hard.”

Cain's bail conditions include electronic monitoring and he is prohibited from possessing weapons.

The family says Jasmine still has a fever and doesn't have much of an appetite. She has another appointment to make sure the ball hasn't dislodged.
