Reasons for and against Liverpool strengthening their star-studded attack with Federico C.

Reasons for and against Liverpool strengthening their star-studded attack with Federico C.

Think back to September 2021. Liverpool had just started the 2021/22 season with renewed hope after the 2020/21 season was one of the worst under Klopp and only two of the possible six players were used in attack.

Darwin Nuñez, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo were just made-up names for many Liverpool fans, but Liverpool's new attacking target caught the attention of much of Europe in the summer of 2021.

Federico Chiesa

Federico Chiesa had an impressive European Championship knockout round with Italy and scored 24 goals with Juventus in the 2020/21 season.

Many fans dreamed of having the action-packed Italian winger in their team. The Bianconeri faithful had another star in their ranks and were the envy of fans of other major European clubs.

Three years later, a long time in football, were three years that were not good for Chiesa.

The winger had to deal with one injury after another before the 2020 European Championship and was sometimes out of Juve's starting eleven for longer periods of time, sometimes for short periods of time.

Although he fully recovered last season and played more minutes than Szoboszlai, Nuñez, Endo, Trent, Konate and Jota, to name a few.

Liverpool, with Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes leading the transfer committee, have discovered a potential hidden gem in the market. For a small price, Liverpool have found a player with world-class potential.

Low price:

The above price was quoted by both Paul Joyce and Fabrizio Romano as £10 million plus £2.5 million in additional costs. This is an INCREDIBLE deal.

Xherdan Shaqiri was bought for more in 2018, Emile Heskey was bought for more in 2002.

That's £17m less than what LFC got for Fabio Carvalho and £15m less than what West Ham paid for 31-year-old Niclas Fulkrug. It's a bargain.

World-class benefits:

That price is a reason to sign Chiesa is one thing, but when you combine that with the fact that he has what it takes to become one of the best wingers in the world, it's shocking how easily Juventus are willing to part with him.

In some ways he has a similar playing style to Luis Diaz, is a talented dribbler, passer and playmaker, but he perhaps lacks the decisive sharpness that Salah and Jota possess.

With some training and additional shooting practice alongside Diaz and Darwin, Liverpool could have phenomenal attacking depth that can rival any team's attacking options.

And even with a cruciate ligament injury, he still has that electrifying pace and fearless dribbling ability.

Injury history:

Even though Chiesa has already played more minutes on the pitch than many other regular players in Liverpool's first team, the threat remains due to his previous series of injuries.

Since the start of the 2021/22 season, Chiesa has missed 80 football matches, a large part of which is due to the cruciate ligament injury he sustained against Roma in January 2022.

Federico Chiesa

Other minor, pesky injuries have not helped over the last two years and add up to his injury list. This makes grim reading for some fans and understandably so, as they are dubious about the signing, having previously made injury-prone signings.

Bloated Attack:

With the signing of Chiesa, Liverpool will have six real attackers in their squad.

The problem is that all six of them think they belong in the starting eleven, which is obviously not possible, so how do you keep six top-class players happy?

Salah and Diaz have started the season in top form, with Jota having a goal and an assist. Gakpo and Nuñez have only played 20 minutes each but are making good progress with their national teams in international summer tournaments.

If you add Chiesa, they all seem perhaps a bit too deep, as you have to provide for six players.

Those who can't complain, however, are the fans, one of the best and most entertaining attacking forces in the world.
