The Clark County School District reports 23 confiscated weapons since August, including nine firearms

The Clark County School District reported the seizure of 23 weapons since August 1, including nine firearms, in its updated online firearms seizure report.

The document stated the start date as August 1. The first weapon was seized from an adult at Legacy High School on August 7 at 10 p.m.

Weapons found at or near CCSD schools:

  • East High School – 9
  • Desert Pines High School – 3rd
  • Craig Elementary School – 2
  • Bartlett Elementary School – 1
  • Cannon Middle School – 1
  • Del Sol High School – 1
  • Findlay Middle School – 1
  • Green Valley High School – 1st

Legacy High School was listed nine times in the document. Five of the nine handguns were located on or near campus. Three knives were found at Desert Pines High School.

Total number of weapons seized:

  • Handguns – 9
  • Knives – 7
  • Other Weapons – 6
  • BB / Air Rifle – 1
  • Long gun – 0

According to CCSD police, only one handgun has ever been found on a CCSD campus, although the online report says there have been three. CCSD police arrested 52-year-old Jynnell McClellan on Monday, Aug. 19, on suspicion of possession of a weapon on school property. The substitute teacher's arrest came as part of an investigation that was launched after a gun was found in the parking lot of Legacy High School, CCSD police said.

A CCSDPD spokesperson said the report needed to be updated to provide clarity on the location of the handguns. The CCSD sent an email statement to News 3 questioning the location of the other two guns allegedly found on the Legacy High School campus.

The Clark County School District Police Department is committed to keeping CCSD campuses safe for students, staff and the community. The most recent weapons report reported a firearm recovered on a school campus this school year, and two other firearms listed in the report were found on a vacant CCSD lot adjacent to a school on August 16, 2024. The other reported firearms were seized during traffic stops and other off-campus investigations.

The CCSDPD continues to work on updating the Weapons Seizure Report to provide transparency to the public. Because CCSD Police Department officers are assigned to campuses, weapons seized during traffic stops are occasionally attributed to the closest school campus, even when there is no connection.

Most of the gun seizures occurred on August 16 between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at Legacy High School, during a football game. The CCSDPD told News 3 that none of the seized weapons came from the new “Weapon detection system.”

The report also lists three intersections where weapons were recovered. The CCSDPD reported that during a traffic stop on August 22, two weapons were recovered from an intoxicated driver and passenger before the car entered a school zone at Lamb and Ownes near Ruben Diz Elementary School.

The other intersections were Deer Springs Way and Goldfield St near Legacy High School and Cambridge and Katie near Petersen Dean Elementary School.

According to the report, police have so far confiscated weapons from ten adults and eleven students.
