Man arrested for grievous bodily harm with a deadly weapon

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – A Washington County man faces multiple charges after reporting domestic violence.

On Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., the Washington County Sheriff's Office received a report of a physical altercation at a home in Chipley. The caller told emergency responders that an elderly man may have broken someone's arm and was threatening people with a knife.

Officers said they drove to the address and encountered a man matching the description along the way. Jerald Eugene Overturf, 65, was arrested for further investigation.

When officers arrived at the home, they made contact with the victims of the case.

According to police, there were visible signs of an altercation. The emergency services took the victim to the hospital.

According to the sheriff's office, another victim in the case said Overturf and the victim had been evicted and were living in a tent in their backyard. While she was walking the dog, she heard screaming coming from the tent and texted a neighbor to come over.

As the victim approached the tent, she allegedly saw Overturf standing over the victim with a knife. She then went into her house to get a gun and went back to the tent.

According to police, several neighbors heard the screaming and came to help.

Officers report that after being convinced to leave the tent, Overturf carried a knife and threatened everyone he came into contact with before throwing the knife at one of the neighbors and leaving the house on foot.

Overturf was arrested and booked into the Washington County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
