Driver dies after collision with deer in Callahan County

A fatal accident involving a deer occurred in Callahan County on Wednesday morning.

The driver of the vehicle, Brandi Deann Ross, 37, of Santa Anna, died in hospital from injuries sustained in the early morning crash, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

According to the DPS preliminary investigation, Ross and a 7-year-old passenger were traveling south on U.S. Highway 283 in a 2010 Ford Fusion around 5:30 a.m. The driver struck a deer in the road, causing the vehicle to leave the road and strike a tree 13 miles south of Baird.

Both Ross and the little girl were taken to Hendrick Medical Center. The child suffered minor injuries. Ross was pronounced dead by a doctor at 12:42 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the DPS report, the driver and passenger of the vehicle were not wearing seat belts. The road was dry and the weather was clear.

A Texas Highway Patrol corporal investigated the accident, assisted by a THP trooper.
