Son of Mishawaka mayor convicted of drunk driving accident

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) – The son of Mishawaka's mayor has avoided prison time after pleading guilty to driving under the influence last fall.

According to MyCase, Joseph Wood reached a settlement in court on Wednesday.

He was sentenced to one year in prison, but the entire year was suspended. Instead, he must serve a suspended sentence.

Wood was arrested last September after he crashed his pickup truck into two parked cars and a utility pole on Frances Street in South Bend. His blood alcohol content was 0.15%, according to court documents.

Wood, the son of Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood, has been at the center of much controversy in recent years. Before his arrest, he was suspected of drunk driving during a traffic stop in Mishawaka, but was given a ride home by police instead.

After his arrest, a video surfaced online in which he repeatedly uttered racist slurs. It also apparently showed him pointing a gun and pretending to use it.
