Chalfant worked as a mechanic for US Steel Mon Valley Works Clairton until 2017 and was also an instructor for the Allegheny County Police & Fire Training Center, according to his LinkedIn profile.

A month ago, he also received certification as a state-recognized firefighter instructor.

A former colleague, Shawn Nowakowski, praised Chalfant on Facebook after his performance, writing, “This is the definition of leadership from the front… I am proud to have stood by Brian on calls, in training, at council meetings, in his backyard, and at the firehouse. I am most proud to call him a friend and mentor.”
