An official investigation has been launched against Telegram's boss and founder, Pavel Durov, as part of an investigation into organized crime on the messaging app, French prosecutors say.

Mr Durov, 39, was not remanded in custody but placed under judicial supervision and must post bail of 5 million euros (4.2 million pounds; 5.6 million dollars).

Russian-born Mr Durov, who also holds French nationality, must also report to a French police station twice a week and is not allowed to leave French territory.

He was initially arrested last Saturday upon his arrival at Le Bourget airport north of Paris on the basis of an arrest warrant for crimes related to the app.
