California State Senate passes ‘Entertainment Zone’ bill allowing alcohol to-go – Commercial Observer

In California, bars and restaurants will soon be allowed to sell drinks to go.

A bill proposed by the California State Senator. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco), which would loosen the state's strict liquor laws, passed the Senate unanimously and will now be sent to the governor. Gavin Newsomon the desk for final approval.

SB969 would allow California cities to establish “entertainment zones” where local establishments could serve alcohol outside their premises and in to-go containers within the designated zone, in an effort to boost economic activity in downtown areas that have struggled since the COVID-19 pandemic. Weiner's office said earlier this year the measure was inspired by similar programs in states like Ohio and Virginia that have helped revitalize downtown business districts.

The bill In March, a state Senate committee unanimously passedThe Senate Committee on Government Organization. The bill then passed the state Assembly earlier this week by a vote of 72 to 2 before being sent to the full state Senate.

“The best sides of our communities are revealed when community events bring our streets to life,” said Wiener said in a statement. “Under my previous legislation, SB 76, San Francisco seized the opportunity to create new opportunities to revitalize our streets and revitalize our downtown. I am thrilled to see this final vote make the program more robust in San Francisco and expand it across the state.”

Wiener's office said cities could also adapt the “entertainment zone” concept to their individual needs and specific events. SB 969 is sponsored by tThe City of San Jose, the City and County of San Francisco and the California Nightlife Association.
