Americans reportedly died after a Viking ship replica sank off the coast of Norway

According to several reports, a US tourist died when a replica of a Viking boat sank off the coast of Norway.

According to Agence France Presse and the BBC, six people were on board the nine-meter-long, open wooden ship on Tuesday evening, August 27, when it encountered rough seas – with waves between 4 and 5 meters high – during an expedition from the Faroe Islands to Norway.

The ship sent a distress signal and five people, including the captain, were able to board an inflatable life raft and were flown out by helicopter with the help of the Norwegian Coast Guard ship. KV Bergenwho arrived on site, according to a Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang (VG).

According to AFP, the passengers on board were attempting a journey from the Faroe Islands to Alesund in Norway – similar to a journey the Vikings made over 1,000 years ago.

According to VG, the survivors came from Switzerland and the Faroe Islands.

The local newspaper also reported that the boat's captain had not yet been questioned, but that authorities had launched an investigation.
