Vice Principal in Texas is partially blind after her eye was knocked out of its socket in an attack by a crazed student

An assistant principal in Texas was partially blinded after a student attacked her; her eye fell out of its socket.

The 11-year-old student became violent and attacked another child on a Corsicana campus, forcing students and the teacher to leave the classroom on August 15.

When Collins Intermediate School Assistant Principal Candra Rogers arrived to help, the boy was throwing chairs.

Although she fended off three chairs that the angry boy threw at her, she was unable to stop a wooden coat hanger that he hurled at her.

“The coat hanger hit my right eye and knocked it out of its socket,” she recalled at a press conference on Tuesday with her husband and family.

“I grabbed my face as the blood rushed from my head and stumbled out the classroom door.”

Rogers was flown from the small town in northern Texas to Dallas, about 88 kilometers away, for medical treatment, where doctors were able to sew her eye back on.

“They (the doctors) have determined that I am blind and currently believe that my damage is permanent. I will need to undergo further surgery to repair my eyelid,” she explained.

If the damage is permanent, she will lose her eye.

“I still believe in God’s miracle to restore my sight,” Rogers added.

“We should never have to fear being in a classroom with an aggressive student.”

Rogers described the classroom as “ransacked” when she arrived, with overturned furniture everywhere.

Rogers was accompanied to the press conference by her husband, a coach in the same school district.

“A student was holding his head after being attacked by the student remaining in the classroom.”

It is unclear if the student had a history of violence, as school officials are not commenting on his past or releasing his name. However, Rogers has repeatedly stressed that public schools must accept students regardless of their mental or behavioral history.

Although the aggressive student was arrested on the day of the incident, according to local media reports, he has since been handed over to his parents, who are wearing an ankle bracelet.

His name was not mentioned.

“We will just wait and see and take legal action. Hopefully Mrs. Rogers will be well soon and able to return to work soon,” said Raymond Lenix, spokesman for Corsicana ISD.

The student is confined to a specific location and cannot stay on campus, the school district said.

The incident has been referred to the Navarro County District Attorney's Office and the Juvenile Justice Department, and the school anticipates charges will be filed, the press release said.

Rogers joined the Corsicana district last semester. Her husband, Eugene Rogers, is the head football coach at Corsicana High School.

As a show of support for the Rogers family, the district is hosting a fundraising day called “Jeans Day” on Friday.

The suggested donation is $2 for students and $5 for staff.

“Jeans often represent comfort and style, but on Friday they mean more than that. Corsicana ISD staff and students can wear jeans on Friday as part of normal campus fundraising activities,” the district said.
