Read the indictment against a former Stoughton police officer in the murder of Sandra Birchmore

A former Stoughton police officer is charged with the murder of Sandra Birchmore, a pregnant woman who federal authorities say was sexually abused as a teenager before committing suicide in 2021.

Matthew Farwell, a former member of the Stoughton Police Department, was arrested Wednesday morning as part of a state and federal investigation into Birchmore's death in her Canton apartment on February 1, 2021.

An internal Stoughton police investigation released in 2022 found that Farwell had sexual relations with Birchmore when he was 15. The age of consent in Massachusetts is 16.
