Japan finally declares its SLIM lunar module dead

Japan has ended its SLIM lunar mission after no contact could be established with the lander since April.

The Japan Aerospace Agency (JAXA) launched the Smart Lander to study the moon (SLIM) aboard an H-IIA rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center on September 7, 2023. The tiny lander made a successfulalbeit crookedly, landed on the rim of the Shioli crater on January 19 of this year. The 200-kilogram, solar-powered lander, which was only supposed to spend a single lunar day on the surface, caused a big surprise by surviving three ice-cold lunar nights.
