Fort Myers woman sentenced to 10 years in prison for fatal stabbing during fight

A motion filed in May sought to acquit 24-year-old A'lexis Jewett of the charge of stabbing 18-year-old Jyrah Woolfork on the grounds of self-defense.

One of the two women accused in a fatal stabbing attack in Fort Myers asked the court in May to dismiss her case, citing “legal immunity.” This week, she changed her plea.

A'lexis Jewett, 24, pleaded no contest Monday to the amended charges of manslaughter with a deadly weapon and assault. The state orally amended the charges, which had previously been second-degree murder and assault.

Lee Circuit Court Judge Bruce Kyle found her guilty and sentenced her to ten years in prison for manslaughter and two days in prison for assault, with credit for time already served.

Jewett was released on $100,000 bail on May 1, 2023. Nearly a year later, on May 2, Jewett, through her public defender, filed a motion to dismiss the charges against her, claiming self-defense.

On March 31, 2023, at approximately 8:45 p.m., officers responded to the 5300 block of Summerlin Road where a woman was lying on the ground. Court documents have identified the victim as Jyrah Woolfork, 18, who is believed to have graduated from Mariner High School this year.

According to the motion to dismiss filed in May, an altercation between Jewett and another person at a liquor store had previously led to the stabbing.

According to the prosecution, Jewett and her mother arrived at the apartment complex about two hours before the stabbing, but the person Jewett wanted to confront was not present.

According to court documents, Woolfork was part of a group of about 30 people who later arrived to assist the woman with whom Jewett had been arguing.

“Both groups were armed with various weapons, including a crowbar, a steering wheel 'club', a knife, a hammer and pepper spray,” the application states.

According to court documents, Jewett feared for her life and that of her mother during the fight and defended herself with a knife.

During the scuffle, Woolfork was stabbed in the chest, the motion states. Another woman, identified as Tiara Walker, was stabbed in the shoulder.

A large crowd gathered as Woolfork “repeatedly lost consciousness,” the report said. Several bystanders rendered aid before first responders took Woolfork to Gulf Coast Medical Center, where she died.

According to the report, a witness told investigators that Jewett and her family attacked Woolfork.

The motion, filed in May, claimed Jewett was defending herself and her mother. Court records show Kyle had not yet decided on the motion before the plea agreement.

Jewett's accused accomplice, Kathy Adderson, 53, of Fort Myers, was arrested on December 4, 2023, on charges of second-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the incident. She was released on March 18 on $150,000 bail.

Adderson is next due to appear in court before Kyle for a pretrial hearing on September 18.
