Cardinals manager will not be fired despite frustrating 2024 season

The St. Louis Cardinals continue to slide down the table. After Tuesday night's 7-5 loss to the San Diego Padres, they are seven games behind in the race for the National League wild card.

St. Louis is in danger of posting two consecutive losing seasons for the first time since 1994-95, which has led to speculation that major organizational changes could be on the horizon.

However, the latest report from Cardinals insider Jeff Jones is likely to frustrate fans quite a bit.

“There is a big difference and a lot of wiggle room between Mozeliak's contract ending and him staying in his current job through 2025,” Jones tweeted. “He is definitely not getting fired. He will be with the Cardinals next season. In the same capacity? We'll see.”

The fact that the Cardinals are sticking with Mozeliak despite his recent failures is certainly surprising, and it's understandable why this upsets the fan base.

Cardinals fans want a change, but it seems that two consecutive losing seasons will not bring what they want.

However, Jones pointed out that Mozeliak could take on a different role despite his contract expiring, which could allow the Cardinals to promote someone else to Mozeliak's current role.

Chaim Bloom and Michael Girsch are options. And with new voices at the helm, the Cardinals can still make some changes. But the big change fans want is for Mozeliak to be fired, and that's probably not going to happen.

But that doesn't mean progress can't and won't be made in the offseason. It will be interesting to see how St. Louis approaches the winter, especially if they finish under .500 again.
