New Philadelphia man sentenced to six months in prison for assault at football game

MILLERSBURG (WJER) (August 28, 2024) – A New Philadelphia man who attacked three people at a freshman football game last year will spend six months in the Holmes County Jail.

Common Pleas Court Judge Sean Warner imposed the sentence on 47-year-old Raymond Korns earlier this month, a month after he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and two counts of simple assault.

Holmes County Prosecutor Matt Muzic said Korns was initially charged with six counts, including aggravated assault, before pleading guilty to less serious charges. The judge sentenced Korns on Aug. 15 to 180 days in jail with credit for one day already served and allowed to participate in the prison's work release program. He was scheduled to begin his sentence on Aug. 23.

The incidents occurred on October 12 at a West Holmes freshman football game and were captured on cellphone videos by passersby.

Holmes County Sheriff's Lt. Tim Stryker said Korns was sitting on the West Holmes side “yelling and screaming” when a West Holmes parent asked him to calm down. That led to a confrontation in which a 72-year-old man “stood up to make peace, at which point Mr. Korns attacked him.”

Stryker said Korns also struck a 52-year-old man in the stands and later struck another man with his vehicle as he was leaving the parking lot.

A short time later, a sheriff's sergeant stopped Korn.

Stryker says the elderly Millersburg man was taken to Pomerene Hospital for a facial injury.
