Accident in Des Moines claims one life and injures four others

One person died in a car accident in downtown Des Moines early Wednesday morning.

According to a Des Moines Police Department news release, police were called to the intersection of Seventh Street and Grand Avenue around 1 a.m. for a two-vehicle crash. The two vehicles collided, with one vehicle striking and damaging the Ruan Center at 666 Grand Ave., police said.

One person died on the spot and four other people involved in the accident were taken to hospital.

The accident caused traffic delays in the downtown area on Grand Avenue between Seventh and Eighth Streets on Wednesday morning as emergency crews continued to clean up and further investigate the accident.

Police did not provide any further details about the damage caused to the Ruan Center.
