The New York Liberty lost a game last Saturday. They lost to a very good team, the Connecticut Sun, who are in second place and are now 22-7 after beating New York. There is no shame in losing to a good team. Still, the loss surprised some people because Connecticut had been shaky and jittery before this game, narrowly beating Los Angeles and Chicago at home and not looking very convincing. Additionally, Connecticut traveled to New York's home game last Saturday after playing on Friday. The Sun had to play a back-to-back set while the Liberty had Friday off. New York should have been the fresher team, but the Sun played with more energy and passion. This was a remarkable result.

When the Liberty faced the Mercury again on Monday night in Phoenix, they had to make sure they didn't let it down and lose multiple games in a row. New York was on a roll with a double-digit loss to the Mercury. The Liberty were back to their former selves. Order was restored.

While the Liberty have regained some balance, the Los Angeles Sparks continue to be the WNBA's worst fourth-quarter team, worse even than the Washington Mystics. Those two WNBA clubs are the worst in the fourth quarter this year, but LA has overtaken Washington as the number one lead-waster. The Sparks blew a 19-point fourth-quarter lead against the Dallas Wings on Sunday afternoon. They were still up 10 with two minutes left, but couldn't hold on to that lead. Far too many fouls on defense and turnovers on offense led to a spectacular implosion. A week ago, the Sparks were up against the Connecticut Sun with less than five minutes left, but couldn't hold on to the lead. A few weeks ago, they were up 10 at home against the Chicago Sun, but couldn't hold on to the lead. Now they've blew that huge lead in Dallas. The Sparks have a late-game problem. They are very competitive and don't make it easy for most opponents. Closing games is a headache for them. Something has to change.

Why Liberty could cover/win the spread

The New York Liberty regained their winning identity with a convincing win over the Phoenix Mercury. Now they head back to Los Angeles, where they played just two weeks ago. (In case you haven't noticed, the WNBA's scheduling remains bizarre, and the league will have to address it next season.) New York beat Los Angeles by 35 points two weeks ago. As long as the Liberty win by 13 here, they still cover the difference. They could be 22 points worse than they were two weeks ago and still cover. That's a pretty reasonable bet.

Why the Sparks could cover/win the spread

The Sparks will be angry after what happened in Dallas on Sunday. This team will be eager to make things right, and you'll also see a team motivated to respond to the 35-point loss they suffered to the Liberty two weeks ago.

This is a comfortable win for Liberty. New York won't win by 35, but it should win by 15 to 20.
