Logan Sargeant said before his dismissal: “I don't care at all” | F1 | Sport

Logan Sargeant hit back at rumors about his Formula 1 future just days before his sacking from Williams. The American driver was replaced by Franco Colapinto for the final nine races of the season after a miserable season.

Williams had already confirmed that the 23-year-old would retire at the end of the season, but his serious accident at the end of a training session during the Dutch Grand Prix weekend appears to have sealed his fate.

Having failed to score a single point this season, Sargeant was replaced by 21-year-old academy driver Colapinto after months of speculation. After less than two years in F1, Sergeant was left frustrated by questions about his future.

“Replacing a driver mid-season is not a decision we have taken lightly, but we believe it gives Williams the best chance to fight for points for the rest of the season,” explained Vowels.

“We have just made a major upgrade to the car and we need to make the most of every opportunity to score points in what is a remarkably close midfield battle. We also believe in investing in our young drivers in the Williams Racing Driver Academy and Franco gets a fantastic opportunity to show what he is capable of in the final nine rounds of the season.

“This is undoubtedly incredibly tough for Logan, who has given his best throughout his time at Williams, and we would like to thank him for all his hard work and positive attitude.

“Logan remains a talented driver and we will support him to continue his racing career in the future. I know Franco has great speed and huge potential and we look forward to seeing what he can do in Formula 1.”

Colapinto made his FP1 debut at the British Grand Prix this year and secured an F2 race win at Imola alongside podium finishes in Barcelona and Austria, securing him a place for the final nine races of the season.

“It's an honour to make my Formula 1 debut with Williams – this is the stuff dreams are made of,” said Colapinto. “The team has such an incredible history and a mission to get back to the top. I can't wait to be part of it.”

“Joining F1 mid-season will be a huge learning curve, but I'm ready for the challenge and fully focused on working as hard as I can with Alex and the team to make this a success.”
