Jannik Sinner won in the first round of the US Open against Mackenzie McDonald on Tuesday evening with 2:6, 6:2, 6:1, 6:2.

The world number one defeated US player Mackenzie McDonald (No. 140) at Arthur Ashe Stadium, surviving a moment of shock after trailing by a set and a break.

The Italian then needed two hours and 24 minutes to get through.

In the second round he will now face Winston-Salem finalist Alex Michelsen.

Sinner, who missed the Paris Olympics due to tonsillitis, played two tournaments on the American hard court before arriving at Flushing Meadows.

At the Canadian Open, he lost to Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals before winning in Cincinnati: he defeated Rublev in the quarterfinals and then defeated Alexander Zverev and Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals and final, respectively.
