North Korea claimed it had tested a missile launcher with a new guidance system. State media reported that the system had proved “advantageous.”

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, along with his top military commanders, on Tuesday led the launches of the 240mm multiple rocket launcher (MRLS) under production at defense industrial enterprises headed by the country's Second Economic Commission, the Korean Central News Agency reported.

“The MRLS has been technically upgraded in terms of its maneuverability and concentrated firepower and has proven to be advantageous in all respects, including the newly applied guidance system, controllability and destructive power,” it said.

This latest development came after North Korea on Saturday sharply criticized the revised US nuclear strategy and warned that it would further expand its own nuclear potential.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have further escalated as a result of joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea and North Korean missile launches.
