Tragic accident claims teenager's life just hours after receiving his driver's license

A teenager has died and two of her friends are in hospital just hours after she received her driver's license in WA.

The 17-year-old lost control of her car on White Hill Road in Bouvard, south of Mandurah, shortly before noon on Tuesday and overturned on the dirt road, police said.

The three girls in the car were all in 11th grade and were celebrating the end of the school year with a day trip to the beach.

But the teenager's car rolled over several times and she suffered fatal head injuries.

Her two passengers, both 16 years old, managed to crawl out and one of them called her mother and told her that they had had an accident.

Detective Senior Constable Steven Morgan of Washington described the death as “just horrific”.

“It's a tragedy at any time, but now, at this time of year, families want to be together,” he said.

Police said the driver's inexperience was the most likely cause of the accident on the unpaved, bumpy road.

The 17-year-old was not driving too fast and all three girls were wearing seat belts, police said.

The two 16-year-old passengers are currently being examined at the Royal Perth Hospital; they are believed to have suffered only minor injuries.
