Denby convicted by jury of transporting and possessing child pornography

Officials receive praise from US prosecutors

An Alliance man faces prison time after a federal judge found him guilty of transportation and possession of child pornography on August 21.

On August 21, U.S. Attorney Susan Lehr announced that Tyler Denby, formerly of Alliance, was found guilty by a federal court jury in Lincoln of possession of child pornography and possession of child pornography.

“The verdict provides for a possible prison sentence for Denby of up to twenty years on each count and a minimum of five years on the deportation count. U.S. District Judge Susan M. Bazis presided over the trial and set sentencing for November 21, 2024,” Lehr said in a press release.

The press release describes the events that led to Denby's arrest in 2021.

“On July 30, 2021, the Alliance Police Department received two separate calls for assistance regarding an individual threatening others in the Alliance area. Denby, who was then living in Montana and visiting the city of Alliance, was identified as a suspect and contacted at a local gas station. During the encounter, officers received probable cause to search Denby's vehicle when a marijuana pipe was discovered in his pocket. A stolen firearm was subsequently found on Denby. While searching his vehicle, searching officers from the Alliance Police Department and Box Butte County Sheriff's Office discovered a large number of electronic devices as well as several other very concerning items, including a pillowcase full of stained children's underwear. The items were seized from the vehicle and Denby was arrested on multiple state crimes. A search warrant was obtained for the numerous electronic devices. The devices were later reviewed by the Alliance Police Department. Three microSD cards found in Denby's wallet contained a significant amount of child pornography files. While Denby was in custody, he was questioned by police and admitted that he had child pornography on these devices. He also admitted to traveling from Montana to Nebraska with the child pornography on his devices,” the press release states.

The case was investigated by the Alliance Police Department. APD Chief David Leavitt praised officers in a statement for their work on the case, noting that their efforts were also praised by U.S. Attorneys.

“This week, officers from the Alliance Police Department traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska, to attend the jury trial of Tyler Denby, formerly of Alliance. During the trial in Lincoln, Sergeant David LaDuke and Officer Dani Cambell worked closely with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Smith and Fliam to prepare their testimony. Despite the graphic nature of the evidence, they carefully reviewed all relevant reports and worked effectively with the legal team. Their preparation ensured that their testimony was both clear and impactful. Their dedication and professionalism were recognized by the U.S. Attorneys, who repeatedly praised their quick thinking and decisive action, which contributed significantly to the strength of the case. After brief deliberation, Tyler Denby was found guilty on all counts and will serve a lengthy prison sentence, which will be decided at his sentencing in November. I am very proud of our hard-working police officers and their continued commitment to protecting the Alliance community,” said Leavitt.
