Gastonia woman shot at police and killed police officers

When Laporshia Shanks opened the door of her home on Saturday, May 18, she was holding a rifle and a pistol and immediately began shooting at the police officers.

Officers had come to Shanks' door to investigate reports of a disturbance – a caller said Shanks, who had been drinking heavily the night before, had smashed the windows of her apartment.

What followed was a hail of bullets, according to Shanks' mother, Pamela Shanks, who witnessed the shooting.

“I kept telling them to stop shooting her. She was already dead,” she said tearfully on Tuesday morning.

According to her autopsy report, 31-year-old Laporshia Shanks was shot more than a dozen times. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

But before she was shot, Laporshia Shanks shot a police officer, who was shot twice in the legs. He was hospitalized at CaroMont Regional Medical Center and later released, according to an investigative report by medical examiner Dr. Steven Tracy.

Shanks' decision to shoot a police officer was at odds with the person her friends and family knew her to be, and her death was an enormous shock to everyone who knew her, according to several family members.

Laporshia, a graduate of Ashbrook High School, grew up in Gastonia and most recently worked at Freightliner. Shanks was known for her generosity, her mother said. She would go shopping and buy groceries, gloves and hats and donate everything to people who were homeless during the winter months.

“My daughter is a good girl. She's never been to jail, never been in trouble and she's always nice to people,” said Pamela Shanks. “She was a loving, generous person.”

Florence Byrd, a close family friend, said Shanks often stayed at her home during her childhood.

“She was like one of my grandchildren,” Byrd said.

Even after she moved out of the neighborhood, Shanks would stop by her house and offer to help her and sometimes bring her food.

“Whenever she wanted to get something to eat, she made sure she brought something for me,” Byrd said.

Erin Sanders, who was not related to Shanks by blood but considered her family, said Shanks was struggling at the time of the shooting. She had been unemployed for a month and was in a difficult relationship. On the day of her murder, Shanks posted a photo on Facebook with the caption: “You're going to have to kill me.”

“I think it was just a moment where she felt like she had to give up because the odds were against her,” Sanders said. “I think she reached a breaking point.”

Pamela Shanks said her daughter was attacked before the shooting. She went to the house because Laporshia's friend said they had been arguing.

Her mother was standing outside when her daughter got caught in a firefight with police.

“She's missing. I know that. My baby is missing,” Pamela Shanks said.

Gastonia police referred questions about the incident to the State Bureau of Investigation. The SBI did not respond to emailed inquiries.
