Islamabad – Media reported on Sunday that sales of Maggi noodles have so far remained stable, according to Pakistani retailers, as consumers have not responded to reports of lead contamination in Indian-made noodles sold across the border.

In India, Nestlé Maggi noodles were banned from sale on June 5 after high levels of lead were found in the product's packaging. The company ordered a recall of its product shortly after, Dawn Online reported.

India's Food Safety and Standards Authority announced last week that it had banned the company from producing and selling the noodles after tests in some states found high levels of lead.

“What happened in India? We don't know anything. Consumers have not expressed any reservations about buying the said popular snack,” said a retailer.

“We pass on orders for Maggi purchases to the distributors as usual.”

However, a Karachi-based retailer said a distributor of Maggi noodles was assuring shopkeepers that the product sold in Pakistan was safe.

Some retailers felt that the government should take note of the situation since Nestlé Pakistan manufactures the same product here.

“Maggi noodles are completely safe and have been widely trusted in India for over 30 years. The trust of our consumers and the safety of our products are our top priority. Unfortunately, recent developments and unfounded concerns about the product in India have created such confusion among consumers that Nestlé India has decided to remove the product from the shelves in India, despite it being safe,” Nestlé Pakistan said in an official statement on its website.

The statement further said that Nestlé Pakistan does not import Maggi products from India.

“Maggi products sold in Pakistan are manufactured locally at our factory in Kabirwala near Multan. Maggi products made in Pakistan are safe and halal. The product is safe in Pakistan and is made in Pakistan.”

“Nestle Pakistan proactively conducts regular testing on all its products and consumers can be assured that our products are safe for consumption,” the website states.
