Small plane crashed in Sussex, New Jersey on Tuesday evening

According to authorities, a small plane crashed in Sussex early Tuesday evening. The pilot suffered only minor injuries.

The single-engine Champion Citabria crashed around 7 p.m. with only the pilot on board, an FAA spokesman said.

Sussex Fire Chief Virgil R. Rome, Jr., said in an email, “The plane ran out of fuel and struck trees.” The plane crashed off East Main Street near the Alpine Village Apartments, he said.

Rome said the pilot suffered a laceration to his head, but it was not serious.

Sussex Mayor Robert Holowach said no one on the ground was injured. “The pilot did a good job of avoiding buildings and power lines,” he wrote in an email.

“We pray for the pilot and his family because things could have been much worse,” said Holowach.

The Sussex Fire Department arrived at the scene and secured the area for the investigation being conducted by the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board.
