Fires apparently broke out at two different oil depots in Russia's Rostov Oblast following a drone attack on the region, local Russian media reported on the night of August 28.

Residents in the region reported hearing explosions at around 3 a.m. local time, Russian state-controlled media outlet Rostov Novosti reported. The explosions were followed by thick black smoke rising from depots near the Kamensky community.

The governor of Rostov Oblast, Vasily Golubev, claimed that four Ukrainian combat drones had been shot down over the region.

Videos of a fire filmed by a local resident have been posted on social media, showing a large fire and black smoke apparently rising from the oil depot.

Golubev claimed that no casualties were reported.

The Kyiv Independent cannot confirm the claims and the Ukrainian military has not yet commented on the alleged attacks.

The Ukrainian armed forces regularly attack Russian Oil depots in an attempt to reduce Russia's military potential in the war against Ukraine.

In nearby Proletarsk in Rostov Oblast, satellite images obtained by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty indicate that an oil depot fire spread in the Kavkaz oil and petroleum storage facility. The fire has been raging for at least ten days.

The fire started on August 18 after a Ukrainian attack on the oil depot.

Rostov Novosti claimed that due to the severity of the fires caused by the alleged nighttime attack on August 28, there was also a significant risk of the fire spreading to nearby storage tanks.
