GREENACRES – An off-duty Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputy suffered stab wounds during an altercation at a Greenacres laundromat Tuesday afternoon, the agency said.

The deputy, whose identity the agency did not immediately release, was in critical but stable condition at a hospital hours after the attack, Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said in a video PBSO posted on its Facebook page.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. at Lake Worth Plaza, a shopping mall on Jog Road south of Lake Worth Road.

Bradshaw said the deputy burst in on an armed robbery and struggled with the man, who stabbed him in the arm and chest before fleeing in the off-duty deputy's car. The deputy had left the car with the engine running next to the front door of the laundromat, believing he would only be there for a minute.

Another deputy was in the same complex at the same time and had equipment to help, Bradshaw said. He placed a chest compression vest on the wounded deputy and attached a tourniquet to his arm.

The man who stabbed the deputy abandoned the car near the mall. Bradshaw said in a video released later Tuesday that officers arrested a man at the Greenacres Library, about a half-mile north of the laundromat along Jog, that evening and are convinced he is the person who stabbed the deputy. Information on the charges was not immediately available.

Bradshaw said the injured officer did what the department expects of him – and what he is trained to do – when he notices an incident is about to occur.

“That's why they need to carry their firearms and identification and stay in their cars where they can access them,” the sheriff said.
