Here's the new policy for sporting events at St. Lucie schools after the gun scare

Clear bags and random metal detectors are the next steps for those planning to attend sporting events at schools in St. Lucie County.

This all comes from last FridayAt the Fort Pierce Westwood Academy football game, someone yelled “gun.”

Dr. Jon R. Prince, superintendent of St. Lucie Public Schools, said safety is the top priority.

“We will carry out random searches with the baton and also have dogs present at the game,” he said.

Some students do not fully agree, but say they understand.

“I think it's understandable, but I think it's a little too much,” said Price Maxlagrandeur, a 10th-grader at Fort Pierce Westwood Academy. “I mean, that's pretty reasonable if you have a gun. I get it. They're just trying to keep everybody safe.”

Prince said there have been discussions within the district about not allowing minors to enter without a parent or guardian.

“What if you're a middle school student and your brother plays on the team? When I was in middle school, I went to high school games,” Prince said. “I wasn't accompanied by a parent. Games should be family events.”

The Fort Pierce Westwood Academy football team will play at home again this Friday.

“Everyone will be safe,” Prince said. “We're going to have a great weekend.”

The new directive applies to the entire district and is already in force.
