School officials said extra security was deployed on the Hayward High School campus Tuesday, a day after two students were taken to a local hospital after a stabbing incident.

According to a statement from the school, the altercation occurred on campus on Monday afternoon, where a student “displayed a small knife and used it to injure the other two students.”

One of the injured students was taken to a local hospital after reporting to the school office, where a staff member determined he should seek medical attention. The second student “fled the campus and was transported to a hospital in a private vehicle.”

None of the students suffered life-threatening injuries, the statement said. The statement did not mention whether the injured students had already been released from the hospital.

While the statement did not provide details on whether the student with the knife was taken into custody, it did mention that Hayward police officers responded to the incident and that the school was “working closely with the department to assist in their investigation.”

The school confirmed that none of the three students were on campus on Tuesday. Officials said there are “no indications or information at this time to indicate an ongoing threat,” but that enhanced security measures are in place at the school, with “additional security officers and personnel on campus.”

Hayward Police also deployed additional officers to the area surrounding the school.
