Time for metal detectors? Community member responds to gun scare at Wylie West Junior High

A Wylie West Junior High student was arrested Monday after a loaded gun was found in his backpack. Community members are shocked that this happened so close to home.

“I’m very shocked about this because it affects a large area,” said Gary Marks. “However, it has also affected small communities like ours.”

In a news release, Wylie ISD said no threats were made against students or staff and that they reminded students that weapons are not allowed on school grounds. Marks believes the school should take extra precautions to ensure the safety of the campus.

“Metal detectors appear to have worked in other communities large and small,” Marks said. “However, it will require manpower. It could be a smart investment, that’s why we don’t make national news.”

The incident was referred to Abilene Police Department for further investigation. Marks believes that the student’s parents should also be investigated.

“If he got his hands on a gun, that meant he had access,” Marks said. “So maybe you should hold his parents accountable.”

According to APD, Wylie ISD’s school resource officer was at the school all day as a precaution.
