Oct. 1 (UPI) — Two gunmen shot dead eight people and injured nine in a suspected terrorist attack in Tel Aviv on Tuesday evening after Iran carried out a rocket attack at a light rail station.

The two suspected terrorists – who were from Hebron – were shot dead by security forces as they exited a train.

Eight civilians were killed and nine others injured in the attack, the Times of Israel and the Express reported.

Initial reports said seven people were injured in the mass shooting, but the number was revised to nine.

Magen David Adom Emergency Medical Services treated the victims and the scene of the accident and transported them to a nearby hospital.

Local police called the mass shooting a “terrorist” attack that came as Israel expected retaliation from Hezbollah and Iran for recent successful attacks against the Hezbollah and Hamas leadership in Lebanon and Iran.

A large police presence reportedly remained in the area following the incident while police investigated the scene and searched for any additional possible threats.

Shortly after the train station attack, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched rocket attacks against Israel in retaliation for the recent assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut.

Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted many missiles, but it is unknown how many may have hit targets in Israel, CNN reported.

CNN reported that sirens were sounding across Israel and said that some of those reported saw rockets flying overhead while they were in Israel.

The White House warned early Tuesday of an impending missile attack by Iran on Israel and said the United States was “actively supporting defense preparations to defend Israel against this attack.”

Israeli intelligence officials expected rocket attacks on three air bases and an intelligence operation north of Tel Aviv.

Diplomats in the United States and Arab countries say the missile attack could lead to the Israeli military attacking targets in Iran.
