Charges against MS-13 gang member who entered the country illegally after shooting at moving vehicles

PHILADELPHIA, Mississippi (WLBT) – An illegal immigrant faces up to eight counts of attempted murder after shooting at several passing vehicles.

Captain Desmond Jones of the Philadelphia Police Department told WLBT 3 On Your Side that Fredy Antonio Amaya-Marin, 39, of El Salvador not only fired shots at moving vehicles on Beacon Street last week, but he also had no motive.

At the time of the arrest, authorities did not know that Fredy Antonio Amaya-Marin was the suspect's real name, as he had been using the name Jonathan Salvador for a time during his stay in the country.

However, with the help of immigration officials from the Department of Homeland Security, the suspect's identity was revealed after his fingerprints were taken.

The authorities also learned that Fredy Antonio Amaya-Marin had already been deported back to El Salvador in 2007 and had re-entered the country illegally.

According to Captain Jones, further intelligence showed that Amaya-Marin is a confirmed member of the Mara Salvatrucha gang (MS-13), a violent international street gang.

In addition to the attempted murder charges, Amaya-Marin also faces federal charges of illegal re-entry after deportation and illegal possession of a firearm.

According to Captain Jones, he is being held without bail and is being detained by the Department of Homeland Security (ICE) pending his removal from the United States.

The captain says the department worked with multiple agencies on this incident, including the U.S. Attorney General, Department of Homeland Security, ATF and U.S. Attorneys General.

“We will continue to work closely with state and federal authorities to rid the community of such gangs that invade our community and cause chaos and destruction,” said Captain Jones.
