Austrian doctor fired after allowing his 13-year-old daughter to drill a hole in a patient's head

It wasn't even Take Your Daughter to Work Day. An unnamed Austrian neurosurgeon is under criminal investigation for allowing his 13-year-old daughter to drill a hole in a guy's head during a surgical procedure.

The patient was a 33-year-old man who had been injured in a forest accident. He had to undergo emergency surgery in January 2024 at the University Hospital of Graz in Austria. The surgeon's daughter was somehow allowed to drill a hole in the patient's skull. The operation was successful, which makes her very happy. I hope she has a bright future as a neurosurgeon ahead of her.

But also, what the hell, why didn't anyone stop this?

Accordingly Kronen NewspaperAccording to an Austrian newspaper, the case finally came to light after someone filed an anonymous report in April. The worst part is that the poor patient, whose skull was drilled by a high school student, only found out about it all through media reports. And even then, he was not officially informed by the police until July.

The neurosurgeon and another specialist involved in the operation have been dismissed. Investigations are currently underway against five other people involved in the procedure.

According to the patient's lawyer, the hospital has neither apologized nor explained how this could have happened.

“They lie there, unwilling, unconscious, and become guinea pigs,” said the lawyer. “There's no other way to say it… that's not possible. That can't be done.”

The hospital responded with a clear statement: “Hey man, at least you’re alive, right?”
