Ohio: Community mourns 17-year-old junior firefighter who died in an accident on Sunday

EDGERTON, Ohio (WPTA) – An Ohio community is mourning the loss of a 17-year-old volunteer firefighter who died in a car crash Sunday.

At the age of 16, Levi Hess began volunteering as a junior firefighter with the Edgerton Fire Department in March. Hess was a junior at Edgerton High School, where he played three sports: football, baseball and wrestling.

“We ask everyone to keep his family, the family of the other young man injured in this tragic accident, his teammates, classmates and the entire Edgerton community in your prayers and to support those you love a little more in the days and weeks ahead,” the fire department wrote in a Facebook post.

The Edgerton Local School District said the teen's death will be “deeply disturbing” throughout the community. The district has provided support staff for students who wish to speak to a counselor about Hess' death.

“…Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and all who knew him,” the district wrote in a Facebook post.

Hess's family has requested that any memorial donations made in his name be given to the Edgerton Fire Department.
