Fire in children's book in North Carolina | Battery in children's book starts fire and burns child seat in delivery van

HILDEBRAN, N.C. (WTVD) – On Sunday, a child seat caught fire in a car in Burke County.

The occasion: a children’s book.

Investigators said the book was placed between the child's car seat and the van's seat. They believe the small lithium battery in the book overheated and started the fire.

There was no one in the car at the time, so no one was injured.

According to ABC affiliate WSOC-TV, the family had returned home from church and was inside their house when a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the minivan.

A family member grabbed the garden hose and put out the fire, WSOC reported.

“The world itself is moving to lithium batteries, which creates some of these issues for the fire department,” Chief Bobby Craig of the George Hildebran Fire and Rescue told WSOC. “I don't know if there are any precautions other than trying to keep them cool.”

The fire department is keeping the safety seat for training purposes, WSOC reported.
