Mariah Carey's tragic promise to her mother despite their “complicated” relationship

Mariah Carey has shared the moving promise she made to her late mother, despite the pair's strained relationship.

Over the weekend, the 55-year-old Grammy winner was devastated by the life-changing news that both her mother Patricia, 87, and her sister Alison, 63, had died on the same day.

In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning Of Mariah Carey, Mariah Carey spoke openly about her strained relationship with her mother, who was a Julliard University-trained voice teacher and sang mezzo-soprano with the New York City Opera.

Mariah explained openly: “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother was full of contradictions and competing realities.

“It was never just black and white – it was a whole rainbow of emotions.”

Mariah continued: “[Our relationship was a] prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment.'

She openly added that the personal stress had caused the actress “great pain and confusion.”

Mariah admitted that despite her struggles, she still has “complicated love bonds [her] Heart to [her] “My mother.”

The singer also wrote: “I loved her deeply and like most children, I wanted her to be a safe place for me.”

“But our story is about betrayal and beauty. About love and abandonment. About sacrifice and survival.”

“I have escaped bondage several times, but I suspect that a cloud of sadness will always hang over me, not only because of my mother, but because of our complicated journey together.”

The singer claimed that her mother's “jealousy” towards her singing career could have been the cause of most of her problems.

Mariah confessed: “[That jealousy] is part of success, but when that person is your own mother and the jealousy comes to the surface at such a young age, it is especially painful.”

The singer confessed that she has the same “intense” temperament as Patricia.

In her memoir, she added: “I kept some space in my heart and my life to hold her in my arms, but with boundaries.”

“Creating boundaries with the woman who gave birth to me is not easy – it is an ongoing process.”

Despite her broken relationship, Mariah made a moving vow to her mother in the dedication at the beginning of her memoir, writing that she would love her “always.”

Mariah wrote lovingly and thoughtfully: “And to Pat, my mother, who despite everything, I think did the best she could. I will always love you as much as I can.”

In 2017, Mariah opened up to Paper about her “complicated” relationship with her mother, saying, “I've actually had diva moments, and then people can't handle it. I guess it's a little intense, because I come from a real diva.”

“My mother is an opera singer. And that's a real diva, you know – a Juilliard diva. And other people who say, 'I'm a diva.' It's like, 'Honey, you don't know what a diva is – you didn't grow up with my mother.'”

“And I mean that as a compliment, because without this experience I would not be the person I am.

“And when people hear me say things like 'Dahling da da da da' and talk like that, it's like I'm channeling my mother.

“It's not like she says 'sweetheart' all the time, but the voice is like – it's like I'm doing it unintentionally, and I'm not doing it to be disrespectful.

“I just do it and it just happens, and it’s like [in diva voice]”I don't even know why.”

On Monday, Mariah told People: “I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister also lost her life that same day.”

“I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away.

“I am grateful for everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Mariah also had a strained relationship with her late sister Alison, writing in her memoirs that it was “emotionally and physically safer for [her not to have any contact [with her].'

The cause of death has not been confirmed for either Patricia or Alison.
