Cyclist injured in accident off 17th Street – The Sunflower

Shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday morning at the intersection of 17th Street and Mid Campus Drive, a Wichita State University student struck a bicyclist with his truck. The bicyclist was taken to the hospital but is expected to recover soon.

The student was driving his truck toward campus when he struck the cyclist, whose identity is currently unknown.

At the scene of the accident, the driver said he had just turned left and was looking both ways to check for oncoming traffic. He said he did not see the cyclist until they collided.

Several witnesses, including another cyclist, helped the driver contact emergency services and assess the injured cyclist's condition. The driver said the cyclist was not wearing a helmet.

According to the National Library of MedicineWearing a helmet while cycling can significantly reduce the severity of injuries in accidents.

Police did not provide any information about whether the cyclist was a student or his condition, but the driver said police assured him the cyclist likely suffered only minor injuries.

The driver, who was visibly shaken after the accident, said he wanted to go to class now and try to plan the rest of the day.
