Elderly man dies after falling from boat in Grand Canyon

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, AZ (AZFamily) — An 80-year-old man died last weekend after falling from his boat in the Grand Canyon.

The National Park Service said authorities were called to the Colorado River at Fossil Rapids around 3:40 p.m. Sunday. Park officials said the man reportedly entered the water after his boat capsized at Fossil Rapids and was administered CPR.

Despite the life-saving measures taken by the boat crew and the first responders flown in by helicopter, the man was declared dead.

The National Park Service and the Coconino County Coroner are investigating the incident. A cause of death has not yet been released.

This is the fifth death in the national park in less than a month. The events began on July 31, when a 20-year-old college student from North Carolina fell about 400 feet. The next day, a man died after falling 500 feet while base jumping in the park.

On August 6, after a search lasting several days, park rangers found the body of a 20-year-old woman from New Mexico. Last week, a 33-year-old woman from Gilbert was swept away by the floods; her body was recovered three days later.
