A judge in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, denied bail Tuesday for a fired deputy sheriff who is charged with manslaughter after he shot and killed a black high-ranking U.S. Air Force soldier. The incident occurred on May 3, when the deputy responded to a false domestic disturbance report and found the soldier at his apartment door.

Former Okaloosa County Deputy Eddie Duran, 38, has been charged with manslaughter with a firearm, a first-degree felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison. Despite objections from his attorney, the judge ordered Duran held in custody pending a detention hearing on Thursday.
