Tennessee Football Predictions 2024: Check out our game-by-game picks

A single game could determine whether or not Tennessee makes the College Football Playoffs this season as the roster expands to 12 teams.

Therefore, the predictions for Tennessee football may say more than they initially appear.

In the three seasons that Josh Heupel was coach, I was right about the Vols' record once and almost right twice.

In 2021, I predicted a 7-5 regular season record, which was right on target. In 2022, I predicted the Vols to go 8-4, and they exceeded expectations at 10-2. In 2023, I predicted a 9-3 record, and they fell just short of expectations at 8-4.

For this Tennessee football season, I'm predicting a record of 9-3, although I'm not sure how the Vols will do that. I'll explain it in these game-by-game predictions:

Tennessee Predictions for the 2025 College Football Season

August 31: Tennessee vs. Chattanooga

Location: Neyland Stadium, Knoxville.

About the game: The excitement surrounding Nico Iamaleava and this potentially explosive offense will only grow louder after this one. Several receivers will get their chance to flash in this one, but some will remain on the bench in Week 2.

Forecast: Tennessee 59, Chattanooga 7

September 7: Tennessee vs. NC State

Location: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte

About the game: This could be a shootout. NC State is looking to score big with transfer quarterback Grayson McCall, who threw for nearly 10,000 yards at Coastal Carolina, and some talented receivers. UT will have to keep up, which probably won't be a problem. But UT's secondary will be tested, which could spell trouble.

Forecast: Tennessee 38, NC State 30

September 14: Tennessee vs. Kent State

Location: Neyland Stadium, Knoxville

About the game: Kent State was 1-11 last season, so the Vols can score as many goals as they want. This would be a good game for Iamaleava and the starters to sit out the second half and turn their attention to Oklahoma.

Forecast: Tennessee 63, Kentucky 6

September 21: Tennessee vs. Oklahoma

Location: Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Norman

About the game: Once Heupel's home games are over, the Sooners' SEC debut will be one of the most exciting games of the season. Unfortunately for the Vols, the home team is the last to have the ball and scores a game-winning field goal.

Forecast: Oklahoma 38, Tennessee 35

October 5: Tennessee vs. Arkansas

Location: Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, Fayetteville

About the game: Don't underestimate the potential for a trap game. This is the kind of midseason matchup that could save coach Sam Pittman's job if Arkansas wins. And the Razorbacks will play physical, so it won't be a walkover for the Vols. Fortunately for UT, it comes after a week without an opponent, so the Vols should be focused.

Forecast: Tennessee 42, Arkansas 24

October 12: Tennessee vs. Florida

Location: Neyland Stadium, Knoxville

About the game: I'm more confident in a 9-3 record than the Vols losing this game. But recent history shows that UT will lose a game it should have won from a preseason perspective (see South Carolina 2022, Missouri 2023). With no obvious upset game on the schedule, we're betting on an old nemesis to upset the Vols. UT could also get to 9-3 by beating Florida and losing to Alabama.

Forecast: Florida 30, Tennessee 28

October 19: Tennessee vs. Alabama

Location: Neyland Stadium, Knoxville

About the game: The goalposts may not be knocked down again. But there's a good feeling about the Vols heading into this game on the third Saturday in October. UT beat Alabama in their last meeting at Neyland Stadium. And it's questionable whether new coach Kalen DeBoer can keep the Tide at Nick Saban's level. This win could put UT in the playoffs.

Forecast: Tennessee 35, Alabama 31

November 2: Tennessee vs. Kentucky

Location: Neyland Stadium, Knoxville

About the game: Kentucky must answer two big questions before it has a chance to beat UT at Neyland Stadium. Can Georgia transfer Brock Vandagriff make a difference at quarterback? And can UK rebuild its offensive line to keep James Pearce and Co. in check? There are doubts on both counts.

Forecast: Tennessee 34, Kentucky 21

November 9: Tennessee vs. Mississippi State

Location: Neyland Stadium, Knoxville

About the game: Mississippi State is hoping new coach Jeff Lebby can impact the Bulldogs the way Heupel impacted the Vols. Lebby coached with Heupel at Oklahoma and under Heupel at UCF. But Lebby doesn't have the roster to catch up so easily.

Forecast: Tennessee 41, Mississippi State 21

November 16: Tennessee vs. Georgia

Location: Sanford Stadium, Athen

About the game: Star quarterback Hendon Hooker was a little unsettled between the posts two years ago, so don't expect the barking of Georgia fans or the bite of the Bulldogs defense to be much different this time around.

Forecast: Georgia 30, Tennessee 17

November 23: Tennessee vs. UTEP

Location: Neyland Stadium, Knoxville

About the game: Will Gaston Moore or Jake Merklinger get more snaps at quarterback in this game? It's Senior Day, so probably Moore. But Merklinger, the freshman, will need the extra reps to find his footing before blue-chip recruit George MacIntyre arrives in the offseason.

Forecast: Tennessee 52, UTEP 10

November 30: Tennessee vs. Vanderbilt

Location: First Bank Stadium, Nashville

About the game: If UT's season goes the way I think it will, the Vols could be in the running for a playoff spot or, more likely, one of the first teams eliminated. Either scenario would make for an exciting backdrop for this game.

Forecast: Tennessee 41, Vanderbilt 13
