5 people hospitalized after bizarre electric shock accident in swimming pool

Five people are recovering after being electrocuted while swimming at an Indiana pool.

The incident occurred around 2:35 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, at a home in Logansport, which is about 90 minutes from Indianapolis, according to local stations CBS4 News and FOX 59.

Two of the injured – including three children and two adults – were unresponsive when police arrived at the scene, media reported, citing Logansport police.

Travis Yike, police chief of the Logansport PD, said, according to CBS4 News and FOX 59: “According to the report, they felt a vibration in the water and the father was yelling for the sump pump to be turned off.”

“It is an unfortunate accident, but fortunately everyone is fine,” Yike added.

Citing authorities, media reported that a pump cable became trapped near the pool's ladder, causing a protective cover to rip and expose the cable. It then came into contact with the water and electrocuted the group.

Logansport police told CBS4 News and FOX 59 that the five people included two parents, their two children and a friend of one of the children.

Yike added, according to media reports, that a 16-year-old boy who was himself injured performed “heroic acts” that may have saved the lives of the others.

“I want to commend the young man who was in the pool when this happened,” he said, according to CBS4 News and FOX 59. “And (he) was injured as well, but when the power was turned off, he took it upon himself to jump out and realize what was going on and saved the lives of his father, his sister and his sister's friends.”

“Without the heroic actions of a 16-year-old youth involved, the outcome may have been very different,” Yike added.

At least one of the minors is still in hospital, according to media reports, but police said all those involved are expected to recover and that there is no suspicion of criminal activity.
