CHICAGO – Olivia Troye, who left her job as a national security official in the White House under former President Donald Trump after Jan. 6, believes the Republican nominee is preparing to talk about a “rigged” election again in 2024.

“I remember the script for 2020 very well,” Troye told USA TODAY at the Democratic National Convention last week, adding that she remains deeply concerned about the “real-world consequences” of the false allegations that the election was rigged. “He's making the same insinuations again.”

She said she was also concerned about the impact another Trump presidency would have on the intelligence community.

In the Trump administration, Troye served as adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence on national security and counterterrorism.

Trump's contentious relationship with members of the intelligence community was widely known during his time in office – and was also discussed publicly. Troye sat in on many of these heated intelligence meetings.

In a surprising revelation, Troye said that if Trump received classified information he didn't like, he would simply fire the person who provided him with the information.

“Whenever someone provided a factual briefing with real intelligence that really mattered, especially when it came to foreign adversaries … he discredited that person,” the former Trump official said.

“I saw bosses fired, long-time mentors of mine, who were worried about what Russia was doing, what foreign interference was going on, and he just didn't want to hear about it.”

After a decades-long career in national security, Troye finally resigned from the Trump administration in 2020.

In her speech to the DNC, she acknowledged that voting Democrat was a difficult decision for a Republican who wanted to work in the White House, but that as an American, supporting Vice President Kamala Harris as her presidential candidate was “the right one.”

Troye was one of several Republicans who took the stage at last week's convention to pledge their support for Harris and criticize Trump. Harris' campaign aims to appeal to moderate Republicans and independents who oppose Trump.

In addition to Troye, other Republicans speaking at the DNC included former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Illinois), who served on the House committee that investigated Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election; former Trump press secretary Stephanie Grisham; former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan and Mesa, Arizona, Mayor John Gil.
