Details of CHP-involved shooting in Santa Cruz County unclear

FREEDOM – The California Highway Patrol’s Santa Cruz Unit declined to release information about a shooting involving its officers after a chase ended outside Watsonville Friday night.

When asked for details, agency spokesman Officer Israel Murillo responded Monday that the incident was still under investigation and that he hoped to issue a press release “sooner rather than later.”

Through emergency radio messages between officers and dispatchers, the CHP was notified that a vehicle of interest in a weapons possession case had triggered a license plate camera on Freedom Boulevard shortly before 6 p.m. An officer responding to the call reported spotting and stopping the blue Toyota Camry shortly afterward at Stewart Avenue and Green Valley Road.
