Mariah Carey shares the tragic news that her mother and sister died on the same day

Mariah Carey has announced the tragic news that her mother and sister passed away on the same day over the weekend.

The singer confirmed the death of her mother Patricia and her sister Alison to PEOPLE magazine.

“I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister also lost her life that same day,” Carey said in an exclusive statement to the outlet.

“I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away,” she added. “I am grateful for everyone's love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Further details about the causes of death of Patricia and Alison have not yet been released.

Like her daughter, Patricia was musically gifted and completed her opera singing and singing teacher training at the Juilliard School.

Although Carey credits her singing talent to her mother, she previously admitted that their relationship was complicated.

In her 2020 memoir The meaning of Mariah CareyThe Grammy winner wrote: “Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother was full of contradictions and competing realities. It was never just black and white – it was a whole rainbow of emotions.”

“Our relationship is a thorny rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment,” she continued.

“A complicated love connects my heart with that of my mother.”

The singer also dedicated part of her memoirs to her mother, writing: “And to Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I think really did her best.

“I will always love you as best I can.”
