“Significant police presence” reported on UAlbany campus

UPDATE: An officer was struck by a fleeing vehicle shortly before 1 a.m. on Center Drive East on the UAlbany campus.

According to police, a university police officer on foot attempted to stop a car on the Uptown campus. The vehicle fled, the officer was struck and fired his weapon.

The vehicle was pursued by police into Albany. The pursuit ended near the Albany Medical Center Hospital, where the occupants fled the vehicle on foot and were taken into custody shortly thereafter.

“No one was shot or seriously injured in the incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the campus,” police said.

The occupants of the car – four men in their late teens and early 20s – were reportedly not University of Albany students and had been denied access to campus earlier that evening. The officer approached them after spotting them again on campus.

The investigation continues with the assistance of the New York State Police. No further information is available at this time and charges are pending against the occupants of the vehicle.
