Off-duty firefighter saves child from drowning

KANSAS CITY, Missouri – An off-duty Kansas City firefighter helped rescue a drowning child Monday night.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m., firefighters were called to a report of a seven-year-old child drowning in the 8200 block of N. Overland.

According to passersby, the child was under water for an undetermined period of time.

An off-duty firefighter from Kansas happened to be on the scene and heard the commotion.

He immediately took action, assessed the situation and began resuscitation.

9-1-1 was notified and a crew was dispatched.

When they arrived, they found the patient and the off-duty firefighter.

The patient was breathing and had a pulse.

The child's condition was stabilized and he was taken to Children's Mercy Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

It is not known whether there are long-term effects.

The child's condition was stable and recovery was expected.

According to KCFD, immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation was critical to saving the child's life.
