The Oddities Festival comes to West Melbourne

The Oddities Festival comes to West Melbourne

Can't wait to kick off the spooky season? The West Melbourne Oddities Festival on September 1 is all about the weird and unusual.

Expect the unexpected in West Melbourne when the Oddities Festival takes place at the West Melbourne Community Park Splash Pad, 3000 Minton Road, on Sunday 1 September. On the day, between 11am and 4pm, anything is possible to see and maybe buy.

Let's say you're looking for jewelry made from chainmail, or perhaps artwork featuring animal skulls. Maybe you're looking for vintage outfits that will allow you to strut around in style. Maybe you long for the company of a stuffed bat or bunny, or, if you're feeling adventurous, a supposedly cursed doll. You might be sure that insect art is just the thing for that empty wall space in the living room.

Whatever your cravings, you're in luck as long as your cravings are legal. You can probably satisfy those cravings and more at the 100-plus vendors at the first edition of what organizer Matt Gray hopes will become a regular event in Brevard.

Having received over 4,000 responses to the festival's Facebook page, Gray expects plenty of people, young and old, to flock to the park to check out the wares and make a strange day of it. In fact, Gray is so convinced that Space Coast residents simply crave the eccentric and unusual that he has scheduled the second Oddities Festival for Sunday, December 1.

“Our focus is on supporting these unique companies,” Gray said.

The West Melbourne event is the latest staging of the Ocala Oddities Marketplace. Apparently, there's a weird streak in Ocala. The town that most people usually associate with good-hooved horse farms also hosts a popular monthly market for the weird and unusual. The group also organizes regular festivals aimed at the college crowd in Gainesville as well as folks who live in Inverness and Lake County.

Admission to the Oddities Festival is free. There will also be food trucks, bouncy castles and live music. Oh, and why not try axe throwing during the festival? If your life is already full of oddities, you might also consider joining the army of vendors. There are still spots available.
